22/2/21 Day 5

TODAY'S VERSE: 22/2/21 Day 5

“The rain and snow come down from the heavens

and stay on the ground to water the earth.
They cause the grain to grow,
    producing seed for the farmer
    and bread for the hungry.
It is the same with my word.
I send it out, and it always produces fruit.
It will accomplish all I want it to,
and it will prosper everywhere I send it.
You will live in joy and peace.
The mountains and hills will burst into song,
and the trees of the field will clap their hands!
Where once there were thorns, cypress trees will grow.
Where nettles grew, myrtles will sprout up.
These events will bring great honor to the Lord’s name;
they will be an everlasting sign of his power and love.”  – Isaiah 55:10-13

TODAY'S DEVOTION:

Like many people, I am OVER winter! And like many gardeners, I celebrated the arrival of the seed catalogs in January. It was deeply satisfying to my soul when I spent several happy hours poring over the catalogs and ordering the seeds I’ll plant in a few (hopefully) short weeks all the while the wind was howling and the snow was falling. It was a good reminder that regardless of what the forecast is for the day, spring is on the way, the sun will shine, the snow will melt, and the tips of the asparagus spears will poke though the soil.

In Lent, we are reminded of this truth from the prophet Isaiah – regardless of our current circumstances, weather conditions, political climate, economic forecast, work or family situation, God’s word will accomplish what it he sends it to accomplish.  Already by the first chapters of Genesis, God promised a Savior who would turn our upside down world right side up. As we journey through Lent to the celebration of Easter, we are reminded that just as God sends the rain and (sometimes too much) snow to water the seeds, he kept his promise and sent Jesus so we aren’t cut off from the joy and peace we can have in a growing relationship with God.

Now back to the garden … remind me again, how soon can I start those tomato seeds under the grow lights?

TODAY'S PRAYER:

Heavenly Father, thank you for the promise of spring, the truth of Jesus, and the reality of your love and grace. Amen.
